This is a video dedicated to the loss of my brother Robert Shulman and created for "A BOOK ABOUT DEATH" art exhibition.. Robert.was the original MAD MAN magician. He was an advertising genius and guru. An erudite, who launched so many careers during his lifetime: I watched as he was instrumental in giving that first break to so many aspiring photographers, art directors, copy writers, jingle producers, commercial directors, illustrators, and account want-a-bees in the agency industry. His independent, out of the box thinking was the catalyst to spring board the success of those creative individuals as well for many businesses across Canada.
STARTING AS A DRIP OF MY SOUL
SQUEEZING OUT OF MY EYE DUCT
A HUGE, GIANT BLOBBING BUBBLE OF SADNESS
EXPANDING AND DROWNING MY PUPILS
UNTIL ALL RECOGNIZABLE SHAPES
BLEND INTO A MASS OF DRIPPING SENSATIONS OF COLOURS
OOZING INTO SOMETHING AND NOTHING
I CAN’T EVER RECOGNIZE AGAIN
BLURRING INTO ENORMOUS BELLOWING BREEZES
SURROUNDING MY EYES
SOAKING MY SKIN
DRIPPING INTO EVERY CREASE
AND FLOWING BACK DOWN TO THE GROUND.
CAUSE, WHEN DEATH COMES A KNOCK’N
DO I HAVE TO ANSWER THE DOOR?
IF I PRETEND NO ONE IS HOME
WILL YOU FUK’N GO AWAY!
WILL YOU LEAVE ME ALONE?
IT’S BEEN TOO HARD TO TAKE
THE PAIN, THE TEARS, THE SUFFERING, THE FOG, THE PANIC, THE HEART BREAKING,
THE BREATHING STOPPED!
WRINGING EACH DROPLET OF LOSS
I had the privilege of working with bob for more than 15 years in the agency biz. My brothers cracked open the creative universe for me and unknowingly let me fall in. He introduced me to the world of eccentrics and eclectics:Dali, Klaus Lucka von Zelberschwecht, Ann Beates, Spirituality, Ginseng root, Les Paul, Jazz, Advertising Age, Roger Zelazny, Carnabee Street, Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, the Esquire show bar, Dreamland, Transcendental meditation, vegetarian cooking, Russians, Antiques, and to a whole list of highly colourful and brilliant creative people that crossed my path daily because of his magnetism at the agency on Crescent street.
Bob always had my back. A brilliant and shining visionary that helped form my dreams into realities and encouraged my art! There are too many years of experiences to streamline now, but my thoughts will continue to share them all into the universe of endless time.
Love you always! Bob.
