How does the physical properties of your computer equipment influence the cognitive performance when completing a task? Does the difference in the physical motorics, small mouse movements compared to larger touch screen movements, influence how well a geometric shape task is done and remembered?
Gestures have shown to play an important role in enhancing memory and learning. Could gestures also be advantageous in a digital context? An experiment was accomplished where the interaction using a traditional PC and mouse was compared to the interaction using Ipad with a touch screen. 20 subjects was randomly divided into two groups and the participants performed a repetitive task of mimicking a visual pattern using PC or Ipad. Although no clear differences in speed or memory performance, the results showed a tendency of a visual memory encoding in the PC group compared to a more motoric encoding in the Ipad group.
