The Mevlevi dervish turners (‘whirling dervishes’) of Wellington, New Zealand, 30 August 2009.
Inspired by Jalal-uddin Rumi, poet and mystic of 13th century Turkey, his followers have ever since ‘turned’ in the Mukabeleh (“coming face to face ”) ceremony as a way of coming to their inmost selves – a form of meditation through movement. Visitors are welcome to attend the ceremony in Wellington; and may learn the method of turning if they wish.
