Being around boats your entire life in Eden makes one more than just aware of them. They become a necessary part of your life. They become part of your family. You recognise them in photographs as you do old school friends. So Ian’s passion for them goes way back to canoes he made from corrugated iron and hand built sailing catamarans. Sailing continued into adult life with racing that saw him compete in the Sydney to Hobart yacht race in 1991.
But his passion for building boats never left and the modelling began. Ian has built a model of his own yacht “Island sun” as well as commercial powered boats, and a static model of the Ly-ee-moon, which was wrecked off Green Cape in 1886.
But it’s the boats you can sail that give back the most pleasure and take you to quiet tranquil places.
