The East Baltimore Community Corporation's (EBCC) has been one of our community partners since the beginning – helping to connect our neighbors to jobs. This week’s video visits with EBCC’s Bruce Jennings and Kenneth Smiley, an East Baltimore resident who was recently hired as a dry wall finisher for the Maryland Public Health Lab.
EBCC's works with Turner Construction, the general contractor on the Lab project, helping to meet local hiring goals by recruiting member of our community, including Kenneth Smiley:
"I'm a drywall finisher. I've been finishing for around 24 years, and I was out of work. I met Mr. Jennings through a friend of mine who is currently working on the site. He referred me to the Chance Building where I met Mr. Jennings."
EBCC Case Manager Bruce Jennings describes their partnership:
"EBCC is working with Turner Construction to recruit and refer Baltimore City residents to the site to go to work. There are a number of East Baltimore residents who we referred to Turner that are now working on this great site. It's an opportunity to give Baltimore City and East Baltimore residents a chance to take part in rebuilding our community."
As Bruce describes in the video, EBCC has a long history in East Baltimore – that extends long before our project:
"East Baltimore Community Corporation has been working in the community for more than 40 years. It started out of the Dunbar Charrette and formed into a community organization that has services that span from not only workforce development but also youth and family services – which have a division working out of the Juvenile Justice Building. We also have a substance treatment facility. We're doing a lot in the community to rebuild and make families whole again."
EBCC and our other local partners make sure that our community benefits from – and participates in – our neighborhood’s renewal. Brue and his colleagues are helping us keep a commitment that has been central to our mission from EBDI’s earliest days.
Thank you for reading this week’s email, and we hope you’ll watch the accompanying video.
