Silver Cross Hospital selected NexCore Group in a national, competitive process to develop the six-level, 182,000 SF outpatient medical services building (MSB). The MSB is part of Silver Cross’ $400 million, 76-acre replacement hospital campus that was recently completed in the Village of New Lenox, IL, a fast growing suburb of Chicago. The MSB, which was completed in December 2011, houses 106,000 RSF of physician office space and 68,000 RSF of hospital outpatient services.
Many hospital campuses have inpatient and outpatient services that are scattered throughout the campus in an uncoordinated fashion, and patients have to navigate through different locations for their care. NexCore worked closely with the hospital staff, program managers, planners, designers, and engineers to design and implement a more coordinated, integrated model of care at the new replacement hospital campus.
Outpatient services were separated from inpatient services and located on the first two levels of the MSB, with physician offices housed on the four levels above. This single location for outpatient services in the MSB, with its own entrance and parking, eases wayfinding and provides a more convenient and efficient experience for patients. The MSB is also directly connected to the hospital on three floors. As a result, there is direct, convenient interaction between the hospital’s inpatient services and outpatient services. Physicians can easily go back and forth between inpatient and outpatient environments to care for their patients. For example, surgical practices are located on level two, which is directly connected to the hospital’s surgery unit and ICU.
According to Ruth Colby, Chief Strategy Officer for Silver Cross, the hospital’s outpatient volumes have increased 6.5% one year after the MSB opened its doors.
