In tonight's show, we'll start to identify fakes of all kinds & consider how these atrocities are affecting the sale of things that are actually real.
"I've spent an entire career trying to distinguish between fake Meissen & real Meissen, fake Sevres & real Sevres, fake KPM plaques, fake signatures & autographs, fake antique furniture (lawyer's bookcases, "French vitrines," "English" butler's trays), fake folk art, fake photographs, fake movie posters, fake wood, fake glass, fake arrowheads, basically fake everything. Then yesterday I found something fake that I'd never seen before--fake rust!! It was on a new piece of metal furniture from our friends in the Far East. They have concluded that what Americans really want is a "vintage finish" on new furniture. So stop, don't refinish that old broken down piece of furniture that you've been putting off working on. Garbage is what Americans really want. This strikes me particularly, for as you know, last week's show was on Stickley furniture-- the real essence of quality & fine craftsmanship." -Gary
