There aren't many things in life we can know for certain, but here are two of them. First, the number of ailments and diseases afflicting Americans is steadily rising. Many of these ailments and diseases make a drastic impact on our quality of life and even more frighteningly, many of them are fatal. Just ask someone who is raising a child with severe autism- a child who will require a lifetime of care but who may never be able to say "I love you" to those raising him. Or ask a child with a deadly peanut allergy- a child who can't join her friends in the lunchroom at school or go out for ice cream to celebrate a special occasion. Or ask someone who just lost a loved one- a parent, a spouse, a child even- to a long and grueling battle with cancer. Uncommon just decades ago, these things now touch all of our lives in all too many ways. The other thing we know for certain is how difficult it can be to get accurate, non-biased information on the myriad of things that may be causing the steady rise in such ailments and diseases. With big corporations, pharmaceutical companies, and politicians often working together to protect each other, it's hard to know where to find honest information upon which we can form our own opinions and advocate for ourselves.
Luckily, here is where Dr. Partha Nandi comes to the rescue! Keeping true to his mission of eliminating intimidation and fear from health care and putting the power back in the hands of patients, Dr. Nandi gives anunbiased, informative look into the world of genetically modified organisms in his newest episode about foods containing GMOs. With the help of his guests, this pivotal episode of Ask Dr. Nandi presents the many angles of the bio-engineered food debate. Zachary Schafer, the executive director of NoGMO4Michigan, explains in the simplest of terms how and why our most basic foods are genetically modified. Dr. Joel Kahn, a summa cum laude graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School and board certified cardiologist, helps explore the medical implications of the GMO rich diets we as Americans have been unknowingly consuming for the last twenty years. Research presented by NoGMOf4Michigan and Dr. Kahn show scientific evidence linking the rise of GMOs to the rise of diseases such as cancer, colitis, Chron's, cardiovascular disease, various reproductive complications, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, depression, autism, and allergies. Fionna Ruddy, the alternative food program coordinator of Detroit's Eastern Market Corporation, rounds out the expert panel by presenting the many different ways we can make small but invaluable changes in our every day lives to protect ourselves from the dangers of genetically modified foods.
As a mother of young children, the world is full of things that worry me. It's hard not to worry when I look around and see the growing number of health concerns I fear my children will have to face in someway or another. At four years old, my boys have many friends with autism. Too many. They have a number of friends with life-threatening allergies and even more with debilitating allergies to wheat, eggs, and milk. And though they don't yet know what cancer is, it is all around them. And I often find myself wondering why. Why are so many of these things that we just didn't see 20 or 30 years ago suddenly taking the world by storm? I think we all have to wonder, explore and investigate- and I think we all have to be open to the possibility that some of the wonderful conveniences we have come to rely on in life may be truly hurting us in the long run. Genetically modified food has always been a topic that has struck fear in me. It seems so overwhelming. And now-a-days its hard to know where to turn for reliable, information that isn't presented by one extreme or the other. But in just one hour with Dr. Nandi, we can all come to understand how genetically modified organisms could be hurting us, our families, our communities, and our country as a whole. Dr. Nandi and his guests discuss very simple ways each and every one of us can start to make changes in our own lives and in our communities. I hope the world can watch this very special episode with open minds and open hearts. Dr. Nandi and his guests don't have all the answers to what we are quickly discovering is a very pressing topic. But together they will help you start to explore and think for yourself- and that is a step we can all afford to take towards a healthier future.
