The heart of God for every single person without exception is revealed in the parable of the Great Banquet. After issuing invitations to the usual suspects, which are turned down, the master gives these instructions. ‘And the master said to the servant, “Go out to the highways and hedges and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled.”’ Luke 14 v 23 This invitation to be in relationship with God, to enjoy an abundant life of forgiveness and blessing is for absolutely everyone. And just like the servants we’re called to be front footed, intentional, proactive, inclusive, inviting unusual suspects. That’s why Jesus came! He came for people who were far away from him. ‘but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.’ Romans 5 v 8 God is an initiator. He’s front footed! Even before you or I had the slightest spiritual pulse, had cleaned up our lives or were even tentatively seeking him, he sent Jesus for us. Jesus lived the perfect life we could never live and died the death we should have died! We often adopt a “divine appointment” mentality in sharing the gospel waiting for smoke signals from God to reach out to specific people whereas God reaches out to spiritually dead people with no sign of life. The servants are to go to the unusual suspects, issue the invitation, and COMPEL them to come to the master’s feast! Sadly however statistics reveal that the longer someone is a Christian the less front footed they are. But the more we genuinely get to know God the more our hearts should be awakened to his love for every human being and like the servants in the parable our feet are going places we’d never had dreamed, we’re compelling people to respond and our arms should be open to receive them into God’s family. Genuinely, telling others the Good News might be as simple as just walking across the room!
