Original score and sound design produced as part of my portfolio for the MA in Composing for Moving Images, 2013. This clip features my soundtrack mixed with the original source audio. A version with only my soundtrack and none of the original audio can be seen here:
In this scene, I wanted to demonstrate my ability to use found sounds, recorded material and sound design techniques within my film scoring approach. My aim was to highlight the sense of disorientation and fear in the visuals which is conveyed to the audience by taking away their ability to see the character's surroundings. I tried to represent this fear of an unknown danger by using sounds which were quite alien in terms of their source and timbre. This clip gave me the perfect opportunity to experiment with blending my sound design skills with composition in a form borrowed from the Electroacoustic school of music production.
The sound materials I used to produce my soundtrack for this clip were taken mostly from the original film's audio and then manipulated to form new sound objects, which I then split into gestural and textural categories. I also combined my own custom sound objects with orchestral instruments and electric guitars. I used the guitar to create further sound objects by experimenting with different types of feedback and striking the instrument in different ways to produce different sounds.
