“If I can’t change it, don’t worry about it”
Throughout this video, Valerie Steele recalls and highlights all the people who have made an impact in her life. From her mother, who “taught me how to cook, clean and take care of myself” to Mrs. Owens, who inspired her to be a teacher and Lindsay Buff, who “makes me laugh uncontrollably with her loud, exuberant laugh”, Valerie is an individual who carries herself with grace, yet loves to have fun. Being apt to help others, during her battle with twin brain tumors on either side of her head (“people have always told me I’m special and I guess that just makes me extra special”), Valerie mustered up the courage to be the one to ask for help. Therein she learned not only that “a friend doesn’t have to be someone you talk to every day, but you should know that you can call them anytime,” but also had to confront her fears and discover the inner strength that she never thought she had. Therefore, for Valerie, living with cancer was a learning experience – one she would never trade if she could.
