Substantive people know that life is hard. It always has been and it always will be; yet they also know that life is good, so good that at times it is almost delicious.
This is why I believe that substantive people are also the most generous people in the ways that they are willing to share their time and finances to help others. Fear is the biggest impediment to generosity, the fear that if I give away too much and then something unforeseen happens, how will I survive? Our fear locks us in a small room that only has space for me and those closest to me. It is a suffocating way to live.
Those who have experienced the hard side of life know that their fears are right; they may lose everything tomorrow. It can happen to any one of us, but they refuse to be imprisoned by that fear. They know that they can lose everything and still find meaning.
