This is look back at the past year of rich and rewarding experiences that have brought me thus far. It all started with my volunteerism at Sustainable Works in Santa Monica, where I served as a Green Living Instructor. My volunteerism earned me a nomination for HBO's prestigious Andrew Heiskell Community Service Award. Later, I went on the continue teaching and eventually was invited by a dear friend to join in what Los Angeles Green Grounds was doing. Eventually, co-founder Ron Finley's Tedx Talk went viral and LA Green Grounds picked up speed and an association with Ron's slogan "Plant Some Shit!" I went on to create Facebook campaigns for LA Green Grounds, including a 21 Day Detox Challenge and our infamous "Plant Some Shit for Earth Day!" Challenge. My interest in bringing more community programming to our local South LA Farmers markets spurred my next move to produce an "EBT Awareness Celebration of Food" event at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Market during the month of May, EBT Awareness Month. This event featured local chefs who hosted live cooking demonstration sharing how families can shop fresh and create healthy cuisine while on a budget. Next up was more work via LA Green Grounds, as I began teaching Gardening Demonstrations for local elementary school kids. This program has made a huge impact on the Farmers Market at 79th & Vermont, drawing in new visitors and gaining media attention for this struggling market. Another event I'm very proud of was one I produced for The Ron Finley Project, as part of BET Network's BET Experience this past June. This event brought BET and AEG Executives to the city of Watts to plant a new garden installation adjacent to the Watts Towers. It was an amazing day and even their CEO, Debra Lee, came out to join in this important event. The journey continues, as I keep on teaching, keep on volunteering and keep on keepin on, as a part of the solution in my community. You'll see me out there, whenever I can be, helping my community go green and live sustainably. Thanks for enjoying the journey with me.
