When Jesus arrived on the scene, the Jewish religion had become so tangled up with man-made laws designed to keep everyone on the straight and narrow, that they had lost sight of the purpose of God’s laws in the first place; as Jesus said in Matthew, they were straining a gnat and swallowing a camel (Matthew 23:24). We’re going to be looking at what happens when Obsessive and Compulsive get religion. But far more importantly, we are going to be asking ourselves if our own personal rule keeping has kept us from understanding and doing what Christ is calling us to do. The Pharisees and Scribes had developed a cumbersome set of personal and private rules that weren’t found in the Bible at all—and they were pushing everyone else to keep them as well. They thought it would make them (and everyone else) more holy. Today, many people do the same thing.
