Oshan Anand is well loved by many in the Bay Area. Through his teahouse, mobile tea setups, tea workshops and non-profit activities, Oshan has introduced thousands of people to the magic and beauty of tea culture. In San Francisco, his Om Shan Tea House located in the Mission District was a popular and relaxing meeting place for artists, musicians, and spiritual community members.
On April 25, 2013, over a hundred friends and supporters attended Oshan’s federal court hearing. The judge decreed a “mandatory minimum” sentence of twelve and a half years in federal prison on charges of distributing psychedelics, with no right to parole. Oshan’s conviction followed two jury trials (the first ending in a hung jury). Currently he is serving time at the Englewood federal Correctional facility in Littleton, Colorado, near Denver.
We hope his conviction will be overturned on appeal due to legal flaws in the trial and arrest process. All of us are now coming together to support Oshan Anand and his family. Even more importantly, we are called to action, to end these costly, failed drug wars. We want to free not only our friend, but also the hundreds of thousands of others imprisoned unjustly.
The immediate goal is to raise $20-30,000 for legal expenses needed to pursue his appeal.
Please join us for a benefit event in San Francisco on Sunday the 15th, just blocks from where Om Shan Tea used to be.
