New Charter University's history extends back to the 1990s, when Robert McKim Norris, Jr., and D. Michael Barrett founded a competency-based, self-paced correspondence school with a mission to provide relevant, high-quality education at a reasonable cost to working adults seeking career advancement and a higher quality of life. Today, New Charter has continued to make these ideals the center of its mission, which has become ever more important in the current environment of heavy student loan debt and rising tuition. As an instructor, you will be helping to further this mission for students across the US and even the world. This unit will introduce you to New Charter's history and mission, the ideas behind competency-based education, and the people who are making it happen at the university.
