The gallbladder is the small organ the stores bile created by the liver. As the body digests fats, the gallbladder pushes bile through the common bile duct down into the small intestine to aid in digestion. Cholecystectomy is the treatment of choice for symptomatic gallstones because it removes the organ that contributes to both the formation of gallstones and the complications ensuing from them.
