My Senior film, due to responsibilities of other parties falling through, had to be completely scrapped leaving me with less than a quarter to produce a project for our senior showcase. With the help of some loving friends who donated the few instances of free time they had, I managed to put together what was to be a visual representation of the ancient Chinese creation myth of Pangu as mythology is a very important and interesting topic in my life. It is as follows:
According to Chinese lore, in the beginning there was nothing in the universe but a dark, formless chaos. The mythic hero Pangu, who had been sleeping in the chaos for 18,000 years, woke up. Realizing that he was confined to this dark and chaotic environment, he decided to break free from the cosmic egg that held him. He mightily swung his giant axe to smash through the chaos, cleaving the egg into halves, pieces shattering in all directions. This caused the lighter parts of the universe to rise up and become the sky, while the heavier parts sank down and became the earth; the murky Yin and the clear Yang. In order to keep the sky and earth separated, Pangu stood between them and exerted himself to push up the sky. With each day the sky grew higher and the earth grew wider.
After another 18,000 years immersed in the nascent universe, Pangu thought his job was done and he lay down to rest. Then his breath became wind and cloud; voice became thunder; his left eye became the sun and right eye the moon; his hair became stars in the sky; his blood became the rivers and lakes; his muscles became the fertile lands; his bones became minerals; his sweat fell as rain; and his fur became the forests and grasslands.
That’s the beginning of the world as told by ancient Chinese mythology.
This was what I managed to finish in just under 3-4 weeks and is still in my opinion is still unfinished from where I wanted it to end up. Elements of 2D After Effects animation as well as Frame by Frame hand drawn animation are used in this project. In my free time now after college, I have been working to finally finish the film to a level of quality I am happy with. Here is what I have for right now. Enjoy.
