[the] movement initiative is a Brooklyn-born, San Diego based dance collective that strives to remove artistic barriers by working in non-traditional spaces and creating in collaboration with other art forms. By removing dance from its typical venue and execution, we aspire to interconnect a larger demographic and to inspire the masses to find the mover within.
NOW! [the] movement initiative's co-directors, Ami Ipapo and Caryn Glass, have teamed up with local playwright Sarah Hunter in an effort to take on a project unlike anything else we've ever created.
THE [untitled] LUMINEERS PROJECT will be a full length dance-theater production set to the Lumineers self titled debut album. Drawing inspiration from Susan Stroman's critically acclaimed CONTACT, which redefined dance in musical theater, THE [untitled] LUMINEERS PROJECT will include movement, spoken word and added elements of mixed media. This project not only pushes the boundaries of the creative team but it also requires something completely unique from the performers who are forced out of their comfort zones with spoken word. While the finished production will include at least 9 musical numbers/movement pieces, a complete script, film work and full sets and costumes designed to replicate the 1950's, PHASE 1 of our project will premiere an abridged version that will include 4 musical numbers, 2 scenes and 1 film this October 25th & 26th at the White Box Theater in San Diego.
