Some of these fish are returning to the Cascades Fish Hatchery, and some are spawning naturally. Some are fin-clipped hatchery fish, and some are wild -- the adipose fin (just ahead of the tail) is intact. Some have spawned and died, some are building redds (nests for their eggs). This video was made Sept. 21, 2013. Take Exit 41 from Interstate 84 about 40 miles east of Portland. The fall Chinook are part of a historically large run -- nearing 1 million fish counted at Bonneville Dam, the biggest run of fall Chinook counted at the dam since counting began when the dam was completed 75 years ago. It's a great show!
