Fun in the surf at Leucadia's iconic Stone Steps was the setting for this classic surf contest that pitted local surfers with international surf stars. The two founders came up with the idea that contestants had to gulp down a 64-ounce bucket of beer before their heat. That equalized the playing field to an extent, but gave a bonus to those who were seasoned beer consumers.
The event went on for seven years under the direction of Jim Jenks and Richard Dowdy, before Jim went on to found Ocean Pacific Sunwear and Richard became editor/art director at Surfing magazine. For a brief shining moment in the sun, the Stone Steps Surf Contest was the best game in town
