Vital congregations are places with dynamic worship, empowered and inspired lay leadership, and outreach that makes disciples in Christ. At a time when many churches face closure, Oak Forest United Methodist Church in Little Rock, Arkansas is seeing a renaissance. Retirees run a free medical clinic, vision center, and food pantry. This vibrant outreach has brought new people to the church and re-energized longtime members. Pastor Russ Breshears says success is due to positive thinking and a ‘can do’ attitude, “We do not believe that you retire. We recycle people. So, when you are too old to run the youth group, you know, come and work in the food pantry. And when you’re too old to do anything but pray, pray for us. Encourage us. Encourage other people.”
