The Gendell Family’s commitment to Zionism and the Land of Israel is an undeniable part of their everyday lives. Jewish National Fund has played an important role for Lisa and Scott Gendell and their family since 2000, when they found themselves yearning for a way to connect to the Jewish homeland upon returning from a trip to Israel. Now President of the Chicago Board, as well as a member of Century Council and the Herzl Society, Scott sees Jewish National Fund as an organization that speaks to his ideals as a Zionist by providing for the broad needs of the Israeli people. Scott and Lisa’s children, Lizzy, Michael, Billy and Sam, have all found their own ways of connecting to Israel through JNF. Lizzy is drawn to the importance of developing Israel’s water and agricultural systems, while Michael has found a connection to work involving inclusion and therapeutic services, such as Aleh Negev. Billy and Lizzy both chose to live in Israel, for a summer and semester respectively. In the summer of 2008, Sam made the important decision to join the Israel Defense Force, a choice that Scott sees as the culmination of the family’s Zionist beliefs. Scott and Lisa feel that it is their personal responsibility to ensure that future generations know the importance of Israel, and Jewish National Fund has served as a vital tool in doing just that.
