For more than 150 years linguists, philosophers and psychologists have been asking the wrong question about the evolution of language. Before addressing that question, we need to understand the evolution of conversation, in particular, the evolution of non-verbal conversation. Recent research on Theory of Mind and Joint Attention in infants provide a good foundation for exploring the evolution of non-verbal conversation.
