This video piece speaks about hope, potential and uncertainty. At the point of young adulthood, a person is expected to grow into their skin, to take on a role and purpose in society. At this point in time I saw my friends on this threshold, unsure of themselves and how to make that crossing. I was also interested in an idea of masculinity within a contemporary domestic or suburban context. Peter and Simon were best friends and talented collaborators. I compared them, full of energy and desire for adventure, with heroic images from our country’s history, bush rangers and explorers. They grew their beards over a series of shoots and performed with magnetic intensity in front of the camera. As the scene pans out, however, their dignity and resolve is undermined by distractions, the wind and falling leaves, sounds of a child playing in the background. Their scene isn’t so heroic after all, stopping short in an anti-climax, only to begin the loop again. They are still striking though, valiant amidst dated red brick and cement.
