Poverty isn’t just an economic situation faced by those with no money. For those born to it poverty becomes a culture and a way of life that is unique and one that most of us don’t understand. While there are examples of people who have emerged from this culture by “pulling themselves up by their own bootstraps,” most remain in this culture for their entire lives, relying on social services as their safety net. This culture is everywhere and it impacts our schools, our courts, our jails, our medical system and other government programs at all levels. Why does this culture exist? Can anything be done about it?
