The music we played that night was all standards all from the great American song book but the great thing was to see how the musicians work and came together and played with a great since of unity and joy to bring beautiful music to all the people of the Terrace Lounge. At all of these sessions there are many students looking and listening to the master’s play these jazz standards from the point of becoming master’s themselves in this wonderful art form, so these sessions are in themselves just a wonderful live study of the music, as it is happens right before your eyes
I love playing with the different groups that come to the Terrace Lounge each week.
All of these musicians are such a great joy to play with, my good friend Andy McCloud the 3rd I met Andy when I was playing with Archie Shepp’s group Andy was then with the great master drummer Elvin Jones
Every time I would see Andy on the road in Europe we would both say when are
We going to play. So this was when we were both younger so 30 years later we got the chance to play together with Derrick James on alto Sax and Derrick’s friend
Mark Tanelli guitar this group is a must see to believe

Marvin assembled a wonderful live experience here as he had an old friend from the days when he played with Arche Shepp come up from the city,Mr. Andy McCoud,3rd, a master bassist who was with Elvin Jone's group. Andy breathes and leaves "space to be digested" in his solo and allows the bottom of the music or "the lower swing" as I like to call it, to be felt hard. This is the key to it all. The bass puts the third dimension into swing and these guys are swinging hard tonight. Derrick James, a master sax player and composer, has added clusters upon clusters building energy levels of emotion and bringing peaceful, loving harmony together while Marvin continues to deepen the groove with Andy. The music trades "4's" and opens up "healing avenues" for the listener to absorb. Showing young musicians by example of breathing and communicating without words, is what Marvin continues to do at these sessions. The taped examples are available for young students, listeners and others so they can take these special moments home and study them. Marvin has been sacrificing his time for the students and the master players that he gathers to all his sessions also are making sacrifices along with him so that the student players will have the opportunity to be associated directly with the music as opposed to listening only to recordings. In the old days, us old timers would sit on the doorsteps of the masters and wait for them to leave their homes just to be around them. We were too young to go into the clubs but we all snuck in anyhow. Birdland had a "peanut gallery" so under age youngsters could be present. Marvin has made available a very affordable opportunity for all people to hear "THE REAL DEAL without spending a fortune at some of the premier venues in NYC. I encourage everyone interested in Jazz to seize the moments while they're available, we all did, now it's your turn to pay the dues and absorb the tradition Learn to give it all away!
