The 1st World Youth Sustainability Summit dealt with the evocative theme of “Youth and Sustainability in Everyday Life – Challenge, Rethink and Revive Global Ways of Living” seen as a great, worldwide challenge and collective task. It took place from 10th - 20th May 2013 in Berlin, organised by the international initiative youthinkgreen – jugend denkt um.welt.
The event targeted international young people from over 30 countries and was supported by Volkswagen AG, Foundation Mercator, Konrad Adenauer Foundation and Robert Bosch Foundation. Through various workshops, talks and discussions, 160 youngsters analysed, questioned and developed the topic with top-class international speakers from the political, economic, scientific, cultural and media world.
Some of the Summit’s results are a manifesto unifying the voices of young actors, individual and common action and project plans, the youthinkgreen song “Courage to Act” as well as the “Tree of Hope”, exhibited at the Brandenburger Tor and Federal Ministry for the Environment in Berlin.
The international initiative is under the patronage of the Federal Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel, the Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC Christiana Figueres and the former President of the European Parliament, MEP Dr. Hans-Gert Pöttering.
