The documentary, Drug Mothers, follows the lives of 3 mother's of drug addicts In South Africa. In this excerpt from the film, we focus on a suburb in Johannesburg where a desperate mother Sue Castle wakes up to discover that her beloved child’s life is on the line again. Her son is locked in a squalid hotel room in a seedy side of town, wired on crack cocaine and he is not getting out alive unless his mother pays the ransom. If she says no to the drug dealers, he might die. They have threatened to kill him. Sue is forced to drive into a dangerous area to pay a hefty ransom to Nigerian dug dealers to prevent the murder of her beloved son, Kevin. But, this time, after months of "tough love" treatment, Sue says “no” and suffers the consequences. And the consequences are horrific. This is the story of the real victims of drugs – the mothers and families who stand by their loved ones and try and save their lives. This is the story of the drug mothers who fight the fight and lose.
