Achilles International is a free running, walking and wheeling program for people with all types of disabilities.
Each month, Achilles puts the spotlight on one of our programs for people with disabilities and honor an athlete and volunteer from that program. This month we are honoring the Paratriathlon Team.
The Achilles Paratriathlon Athlete of the Month is Evelyn Rodriguez. Evelyn is an arm amputee who grew up in a time when people with disabilities were not encouraged to participate in athletics. In fact she was not permitted to participate in gym class. As a child, Evelyn often felt different and lacked self-confidence because of her disability. Since joining Achilles last year, she has overcome any doubts about being able to swim, bike and run with the support of her Achilles family. She is empowered, is able to get on a tandem bike for the first time, (thanks to a cool new bike arm attachment), and has even learned how to swim without any support in the water. As Evelyn says, “What a feeling!” Since joining Achilles, Evelyn has competed in over half a dozen races and was a member of two triathlon relay teams. Her goal is to complete a sprint tri all by herself, and knowing Evelyn, she will achieve that goal and so much more.
