"Artist Man Yau and Bukowskis Helsinki are excited to present an exhibition and online auction for Yau's project Semiprecious on 1st of November 2013. Questioning our conceptions of value and status, the project consists of three unique sculptures with a catch. The valuable art objects could essentially function as bongs. With rich history going back to 16th century Chinese nobility, the bong and its users are today seen as obscene. The sculptures are entirely made by hand using traditional methods and painstakingly slow manual techniques. The materials include glass, marble, porcelain and precious metals. How does the artworks vulgar function affect the potential buyers decision in the end?
Each sculpture is accompanied by a book that follows the challenges and joys of the work process throughout one year. Shot on film and printed on high-quality paper, the publication is in line with the projects elevated attention to detail. Semiprecious is documented by photographer Jukka Ovaskainen and graphic designer Jaakko Suomalainen. The black and white short film clip is a collaboration between the artist and Cocoa Media production company.
The sculptures will be exhibited to public in Bukowskis Helsinki from 6th to 10th of November. They will be auctioned separately at Bukowskis Market. The online bidding is open globally for ten days from 1st to 10th of November. The private launch event will take place on November 5th 2013. Man Yau's Semiprecious exhibition and auction is part of Bukowskis MODERN + CONTEMPORARY concept.
