Revelations 2:4 NKJ
“Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love.”
The book of Revelation is the vision that the apostle John had of Jesus when he was exiled to the island of Patmos. In this recorded vision was a message to seven churches.
This first message was to the church at Ephesus. They were a hard working church with a no nonsense attitude toward false apostles. They exhibited perseverance and endurance in the face of what must have been intense persecution and they had not given up or given out.
But somewhere in all that work and effort and endurance their hearts must have grown colder to the Lord. They did not deny Him, He just was no longer their first love. The church had started with a passionate love for Jesus Christ but had somehow allowed that fire to burn low.
Even with all of our efforts to do things for God this is still first and foremost a relationship.
Jesus is our personal Savior and Lord and our lives are meant to be lived for Him. Work is good, not quitting is good. Doctrinal integrity and the protection of the church from flaky imposters is good. But none of these things is ever to replace our heart for the Lord, our love and commitment to Him. This is a good reminder for us to put first things first and return to our love for the Lord.
Dear Lord Jesus
It is easy to get busy and allow our zeal for Your work to grow but our zeal for You grow dim. Help us keep You as our first love always. We want to make any adjustment and return to loving and living for You. Amen
