Peter Riddell conducted the independent triennial review of the CSPL for the Cabinet Office at the end of 2012. He will explain the background to his review and how he conducted it. He will outline the options he considered and why he decided to recommend that the CSPL should continue as a permanent body against calls for closure, merger or hibernation between inquiries. He will then out his views on the future of the CSPL.
The Rt Hon Peter Riddell CBE is currently Director of the Institute for Government—the review was entirely separate from the IfG—and he chaired the Hansard Society for five years until mid-2012. He was previously a journalist for nearly 40 years on the Financial Times and The Times, mainly writing about politics. He has written seven books on British politics, is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, has two honorary doctorates and was one of the initial recipients of the President’s Medal of the British Academy. He is an Honorary Fellow of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, and of the Political Studies Association, and is an Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences.
