OLEG TAMBULILINGAN — for two dancers & gamelan gong kebyar; choreography by I Mario (1952).
Pan Sukra composed the music for this piece in the early 1950s. The accompanying dance was later choreographed by the legendary I Mario of Tabanan for the 1952 American/European tour of Gamelan Gunung Sari from Peliatan. The dance depicts the playful courtship of two bumblebees in a garden of flowers. For that tour, the last section of the dance included improvisatory movement and flirting interplay between the ‘male’ character (nowadays performed by either a male or female dancer) and the gamelan musicians. The current choreography of Oleg is a version that has absorbed elements from a series of stylistically similar kebyar dances created in the 1930s, 40s and 50s. It is thus an illustration of the way in which choreographers and composers in Bali make free use of pre-existing material, adapting it to their tastes—considered a sign of homage.
