The stepwell in Hampur, Gujarat, India, is heavily damaged by an earthquake. The camera is lowered vertically by means of a home made device we call the Shah pully. At the left the camera points in the direction of the well itself, now covered by rumble. To the right the camera points in the direction of the entrance. One can see prayer flags above the steps. That and the sound of a temple bell at the end of the film tell that this piece of inverse architecture is still a sacred, poetic place.
The research to these stepwells was conducted in collaboration with ourpeopletree architects in Rajkot
