When researching stepwells in gujarat, I got more and more interested in the waterpots. The pots that are thrown in the well to fetch water, the pots that are at streetcorners, under trees in the shade, at tea stalls, always one there when thirsty. When used properly they are cleaned daily, still, if you are not a long time resident be careful to drink from them, but boy, are they beautiful and an essential part of the semi-arid culture. To me many of these pots are just like eyes, the pot looks out to the world through its opening the retina is blank steel or warm red ochre earthenware. At the left the camera is dropped in a well in Pratapur like a pot would be. At the right a camera is in a household waterpot in Rajkot while the pot is cleaned and refilled.
The research to these stepwells was conducted in collaboration with ourpeopletree architects in Rajkot
