The following is an Artist profile interview with Peter Edlund. Discussing his residency project for the Near West Side Initiative in Syracuse, New York. Part of Peter's residency is to develop a public art project, in which; Peter will install 24 temporary spray-painted four color stencils with text and simple images applied directly to the sidewalks at specific intersections throughout Syracuse. The stencils are a continuation of his translation painting series, Forgotten New York. Since 2005, Peter has been researching indigenous Native American languages and cultures to understand the origin of US place-names ( states, rivers, cities and lakes ) -- words that have become an underlying part of our geography, but whose original meanings and sources are all lost in most cases.
