The remains of a once great intention haunt the Beijing skyline; it was slated to be Asia’s biggest amusement park. They built a fairytale castle and medieval outbuildings on farmland, foreign property developers were about to have a field day in creating a Chinese Disneyland entitled “Wonderland” but it was never to be. Deals fell through and construction came to a screeching halt more than a decade ago. Intrepid farmers reclaimed the land as theirs and began to grow their crops, “waste not want not” was to be the motto employed. Now the fairytale castle serves as an intrigue to visitors of the Great Wall who wonder at this strange structure in the distance, so out of place yet so fitting in the random melee of China’s modern development.
