Coming to California is a 20-minute video mosaic commissioned by the Oakland Museum of California that includes over 3,500 video portraits featuring the people of California, past and present. This piece intends to bear witness to the myriad peoples who have come to California over the years; a vast film mosaic weaves together individuals of different ages, ethnicities, cultures, and nationalities. At its core, Coming to California is about the historical and contemporary journeys ever present in the consciousness of inhabitants of a diverse state like California. Faces evoking multiple places of origin merge and emerge to create a kinetic image of multiplicity, transition and transformation, and maintain a vibrant tension between individual and community, past and present, many and one.
