This is my first documentary -- my first movie. It was my senior thesis at Yale University where I doubled majored in American Studies and the then newly formed Film Studies. The film won the Louis Sudler Prize in the Performing and Creative Arts, the highest award given at graduation. Eight years later, in 1994, the subject of the film became infamously known to the world as figure skater Tonya Harding. My doc, made when she was only fifteen years old and completely unknown, not only follows her to the 1986 National Figure Skating Championships, but also eerily illuminates her potential futures.
