E/NE swell in the 10ft, 8 second range sends in overhead surf at some sheltered North Shore spots, warranting a drive cross-country to pick up 3rd-reef Saginaw Bay charger Brian Tanis, on our way up through the UP of Michigan to explore east facing beaches along Superior's shoreline. Lake Superior was the last Great Lake on my list to surf, and she did not disappoint. See 14:38 if you wanna skip all the driving.
Special Thanks go to Brian Tanis for arranging our visit with Bill Blake in Ashland, WI. In addition, thanks to my folks and family for putting up with my last minute decisions to go / not to go on these hit n' run trips. I know the beach is right here, but there is a natural rawness to surfing these lakes which I believe you cannot find anywhere else. Perhaps this same rawness drew pioneer waterman Tom Blake 28:24 back to these parts later in his life to live out his days.
