If permitted by government agencies, Gateway Pacific Terminal (GPT) would be the largest coal export terminal in North America. Proposed for construction at Cherry Point, Washington, the coal - mined from the Powder River Basin in Wyoming and Montana, will be transported by rail, and shipped to Asia via the largest bulk cargo vessels.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Wa. St. Dept of Ecology, and Whatcom County Council will decide if this project will be permitted after reviewing the Environmental Impacts of it (EIS). Any one of the 3 agencies may decline the permit.
Whatcom County Council is up for elections this November (2013)
