RFI-DJ is an interactive product I designed and created with Matt Campbell.
Matt and I decided to put a tactile spin on the online flash game “Incredibox”. In the game, the user assigns a looping piece of music to a particular character, as if he or she were conducting a little barbershop quartet. We found this site fun and interesting, and thought it could be re-created in a more tactile way, perhaps for use in an exhibit or for educational purposes.
First, we made a few recordings of our friend, David, beatboxing. We programmed an Arduino One to recognize 5 different RF-IDs, each of which prompted a little loop of beatboxing. We dressed the reader up as a stereo system, and the tags as little cassette tapes to complete the transformation from a digital experience to a tactile one.
