Arts Council of New Orleans, 2013 Community Arts Award Recipient
For the past forty years, Schindler has worked closely with the leaders of Rex, Comus, Hermes, Babylon, Endymion, Orpheus, Le Krewe d’Etat and others to reclaim the artistic legacy of Carnival’s Golden Age to design beautiful parades around elegant themes in the tradition of the rolling tableaux of old. He has played an important role in reversing the process of artistic decline through preserving and enhancing the heritage of this unique New Orleans’ art form. Schindler has developed and supported a corps of artists and artisans skilled in using traditional materials and techniques. As an acknowledged authority on the history of Mardi Gras, he is sought out by national and international media for his expert commentary and regularly contributes to Arthur Hardy’s Mardi Gras Guide. In 1969, he collaborated with close friends to create the Societé de Sainte Anne, a Carnival walking club. Schindler served as curator for the State Museum’s Mardi Gras Exhibit and has been featured in countless documentaries. His name is synonymous with Carnival.
