Arts Council of New Orleans, 2013 Community Arts Awards Recipient
One of the most influential dance educators in New Orleans, Munro has served as Ballet Mistress of the Louisville Ballet, Atlanta Ballet, Giacobbe Academy of Dance/Delta Festival Ballet, and NORD/NOBA, as well as being the lead instructor at New Orleans Dance Academy for several decades. She also served as adjunct faculty at NOCCA, the Rambert Ballet School (London), Corpus Christi Ballet School, Allegro Ballet of Texas, University of Oklahoma, Old Dominion University to name a few. Some of her most notable students include Ian and Eleanor Carney (former principal dancers/American Ballet Theater). Although she recently retired at 82 after decades of teaching at New Orleans Dance Academy, she continues to teach an advanced adult ballet class. Lula Elzy, one of her nominators noted “if you think dance, perseverance and commitment to New Orleans dance community, you think Mary Munro”.
