Wonthaggi Railway Line Memories Victoria Australia in the 1970s

reidgck

The Wonthaggi Railway line branched from the Yarram line at Nyora and was originally built to transport coal from the mines around Wonthaggi to Melbourne. Although coal was not carried in later years, a weekly goods train operated from Melbourne and a Walker rail car ran between Wonthaggi and Nyora to connect with the passenger trains on the South Gippsland line. An intereting part of the line was the section where it ran beside Bass Strait and the surf beach at Kilcunda and crossed a high wooden trestle bridge over Bourne Creek, This film, taken not long before the line closed gives a brief insight into some of the operations of the line. It was taken between Wonthaggi and Anderson. There is another film taken on the Wonthaggi line regarding the closure of the Kirrak coal mine in the same era posted at - https://vimeo.com/77125924
