Hormuz is a narrow (Firth) narrow between the Gulf of Oman, located to the southeast and the Persian Gulf, to the southwest. On the north coast is Iran located on the south coast and the Omani exclave of Musandam.
Hormuz were The haunt of pirates since the seventh century. C. to XIX. Currently has strategic importance because it is located at the exit of the Persian Gulf, which is rich in oil. Its width is ~ 60-100 km. It is estimated that approximately 40% of world oil production is exported by this means, what is considered the key to control the world's oil.
