“… Proclaim the good news to the entire creation”
Mark had finished his Gospel abruptly. He had told how three women disciples had gone to the tomb of the crucified Jesus, found it empty, and learnt from ‘a young man clothed in white’ that the body of Jesus was no longer there because he had been raised from the dead. The ‘young man’ had commissioned them to bring the news to the disciples and tell them that they would meet the risen Jesus in Galilee. The Gospel then tersely added that the women told no one anything because they were overwhelmed with fear and awe.
Mark’s abrupt ending was apparently too abrupt for some. Later unknown scribes added an addition to the text, drawn largely from details contained in other Gospel accounts and Luke’s Acts of Apostles. [That addition was eventually accepted by the Church as inspired.]
