The Dravinja river flows in the northeast part of Slovenia. It springs in the Pohorje mountains and joins the Drava river near the oldest town in Slovenia Ptuj.
The valley along the river Dravinja is protected as Natura 2000 area, because it is rich of animals and plants. Its banks are mostly bordered with trees, what is rare in today cultivated landscapes. This offers a living space to many animals that live on the banks and fields nearby.
The major of the area has decided that a kind of educational tourism should develop in the region with many learning paths and points of exploring and observing the nature. Near the river they have tracked a learning path with many info tables. Part of this is our bird watching pavilion near a little town called Poljčane.
In the empty field near the void of the river, beside a line of trees, there was the right place to observe the nature nearby. Enough near to the school an enough deep in the fields we placed the pavilion that works as an outside classroom for pupil and for those who are walking nearby on the learning path. To make learning more interesting we added some interactive accessories that present the nature around in a more playful way.
While cycling many stop and just for curiosity start to turn the interactive wheels and so learn about animals and plants. Observing and educating was the main goal of this intervention. But on the other hand we also tried to offer a more inventive architectural approach even to simple buildings like this. People have accepted it well and hopefully they will start to respect the living space around them.
