The Skyview Strom just keep winning. Friday night Skyview defeated the Auburn Trojans 34-21 at Kiggins Bowl to advance to the WIAA 4A Semifinals.
Skyview WR Ellis Henderson returned a kickoff 97 yards for the Strom after Auburn took an early 7-0 lead when RB Alphonse Wade scored on a 62 yard run. Trailing 7-6, Skyview allowed another Auburn score as Austin Embody scored from 7 yards out.
Down 14-6 after one, the second quarter belonged to Skyview. QB Austin Dodge connected with WR Ian Zarosinski on a 34 yard catch and run screen pass for the Storm’s second TD. Down 14-13 late in the second, Matt Spears ran in from 6 yards out to take a 19-14 lead. On the extra point, Henderson struck again. Henderson, the holder, took the snap and ran right up the middle for the 2 points and a 21-14 halftime lead.
Auburn’s Wade scored on his second 62 yard run of the night early in the second to tie the score at 21. The Trojans would not score again despite 268 rushing yards by the Auburn Jr.
Early in the forth at the Auburn 7, Skyview dug into their bag of tricks and pulled out a option halfback pass. Dodge ran to his left, pitched the ball to Spears, who pulled up and found a wide open Karl Graves in end zone and a 28-21 Storm lead. After a few punts, Skyview took over just short of mid field with a little over six minutes remaining in the game. Hoping to run some time off the clock, Skyview did one better, they scored. They scored and took time off the clock. Dodge ran in a 1 yard QB sneak with 57 seconds left on the clock. The extra point was missed, but it did not matter as Skyview was up 34-21 and ready to pack their bags to head east.
Skyview’s defense played a very solid game despite the big runs by Wade and Embody. The Strom forced 7 Trojan punts. Auburn had only punted 4 times all season entering the game.
With the win Skyview improves to 10-2. The Strom will travel east and play at either Ferris or Eisenhower next Saturday in the Semifinals.
Auburn falls to 11-1 with the loss. The Trojans season is over.
